Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons ground ginger

1 teaspoon cinnamon

¼ teaspoon cloves

½ cup unsalted butter, melted

¾ cup brown sugar

¾ cup molasses

1 large egg

¾ cup hot water or coffee

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a loaf pan.

2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.

3. In another bowl, mix melted butter, brown sugar, molasses, and egg until smooth.

4. Alternate adding dry ingredients and hot water to the wet mixture. Stir gently.

5. Pour batter into the prepared pan.

6. Bake for 45–50 minutes until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

7. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For extra festive flavor, add orange zest to the batter.

Top with powdered sugar or whipped cream before serving.

Pairs well with hot coffee or vanilla ice cream.
